20 YEARS OF EXCELLENCE IN TRANSPORTATION

Get Winter Road Ready – Fatigue and Burnout avoidance . Part 4

In the previous blogs, we were discussing how to get ready for winter driving, as well as the dangers of winter roads. Let’s talk now about how to avoid the stress of winter driving.

Winter brings with it more difficult driving conditions and shorter daylight. Along with it comes lower temperature. If you add to the mix the usual stress of the transportation industry, the risk of burnout is very high.

How to minimise the risk of burnout in winter?

  1. Getting enough sleep seems to be not easy to achieve the goal. With a hectic schedule sometimes it seems not much you can do. But try to stay away from phones, social media, and gadgets before going to sleep. It will add precious minutes, if not hours to your sleep.
  2. One of the biggest mental traps of burnout is isolation. Unfortunately, drivers spend a long time on the road away from family and friends. Stay connected with family and friends via phone and video calls during breaks. You have so many great shared emotions together!
  3. Stay in touch with positive people. Family members or friends, there are always people who bring positivity into your life!
  4. Find a way to move and exercise more. Whether it is a simple routine or stretches that you can do in your cab, gym, or outdoors – physical activity restores and boosts your energy naturally.
  5. Luckily most cross-border routes to the USA take you to warmer weather where you can simply take a break from the Canadian cold!
  6. Treat yourself once in a while to the foods you like! While eating healthy is an important factor in your overall energy level, breaking the routine once in a while brings positive emotions.
  7. If you feel lower energy levels, especially towards the end of the winter, you may consider talking to your health provider to see if some vitamins may be beneficial.
  8. You might enjoy some winter sports – skiing, skating, and snowshoeing!

Winter is a very special time of year. It is sometimes tough on us – but it gives us a chance to slow down and appreciate little downtime. It also brings a few weeks of great holidays and family gathering traditions for different cultures. We all get to enjoy the outdoor Christmas and Hanukkah lights. And let’s face it – you do smile when you see a Christmas-decorated truck passing by!

Enjoy Winter! Safe driving!
